Choosing a camera to livestream your church services can be a daunting task. There are so many different brands, sensors, styles, and prices that it’s difficult to know exactly what kind of camera will be the best fit. When it comes to PTZ cameras for church use, though, there are a few things to consider that will make the decision a lot easier.

PTZ Camera for Church: What to Consider

Before shopping for PTZ cameras, it’s important to understand what impacts the pricing of the camera. PTZ cameras are more expensive than their static camera counterparts. This is because you’re not just getting a camera body – you’re getting motors for pan, tilt, and zoom; networking tech for true remote control, a zoom lens, a sensor, and a camera body.

If you’re looking at a mirrorless camera, for example, you can get a “higher quality” camera body for much less than a PTZ. But all you get is the body, everything else (including the muscles to pan, tilt, and zoom the camera) costs extra.

The price of a PTZ camera is impacted the most by the sensor size and build quality. A knock-off camera might look great on the outside, but it’s the sensor that will be cheap quality and the mechanics will die quickly in most cases.

So, we want to stress that by no means should you consider ordering a cheap’o PTZ camera. There are tons of these on Amazon and Wish and the like – you will end up wasting more money than you save in the long run, and your livestream will look like garbage.

So, we encourage you to do your homework, check out the example footage from the actual camera, and pay close attention to the warranty and support options available. Those are worth more than the camera, especially after a year or two.

The Sensor Size

The size of the sensor affects the amount of data your camera can collect, which means larger sensors can get a shallower depth of focus as well as perform better in low light.

The Build Quality

Again, you get what you pay for. Reputable companies will have the highest quality cameras that last the longest. Brands like Canon and PTZOptics cannot afford to ship equipment that has a reputation of breaking quickly.

The Built-In Features of the PTZ Camera

PTZ cameras are really cool because you can control many different cameras from a single location with a single volunteer at a joystick controller. But there are other features that PTZ cameras can do that make a huge difference to your production.

Auto-Tracking Features

This is becoming very popular. Having the PTZ camera track a subject automatically can be a game-changer. However, the effectiveness of the auto-tracking is going to differ from camera to camera. Some cameras, like Canon PTZ cameras, have sophisticated auto-tracking tools. However, to get all of the features, it’s a paid upgrade.

Ease of Use

As a live streaming service, we have used a number of PTZ camera brands, and there are some we never want to touch again. The worst thing about having a camera with a lot of remote-control features is that, when something goes wrong, it ruins the camera for the most part. Until you fix the issue, you can’t really get much use from the camera.

Having a camera that is easy to setup, easy to configure, and then easy to use is critical – and I mean CRITICAL.

Canon and PTZOptics seem to be the easiest we’ve used.

Warranty Coverage

Cameras are expensive, and you don’t want to waste money on a dud – which is what you do if you buy cheap PTZ camera knockoffs from unknown brands. Trust me, there are a ton of random brands on Amazon for sale, and all of them originate from the same country that doesn’t have the best reputation for creating quality from scratch.

PTZOptics has our favorite warranty coverage of any manufacturer. Their cameras are covered for FIVE years, which is now the industry standard – but they set the standard and everyone else had to copy them.

Getting your cameras repaired or replaced under the PTZOptics warranty is super easy, and super fast. Trust me, when our customers have problems with their cameras, we breathe a sigh of relief when we find out those cameras are PTZOptics.

That’s not hyperbole.

Technical Support

Again, PTZOptics is our favorite. Canon is quite good as well, but they are such a large company, that finding the right phone number to call can take forever. But once you get the PTZ department, they are great too.

A Word About PTZ Camera Quality

The PTZ Cameras from Canon and PTZOptics that we sell at ChurchSetup are all considered broadcast-quality cameras. However, there is often confusion about what that means.

Broadcast quality is not cinematic quality.

If you want cinematic, you will need to get a cinema camera like from Blackmagic Design or Canon. These are often mirrorless cameras and are hand-held or tripod-mounted. They are not PTZ cameras.

Broadcast quality is more like you would find on a television broadcast. There is no cinematic shallow depth of field, and the dynamic range is not the same.

Buying PTZ Cameras for Church

You can buy the camera on its own from just about any camera dealer. You can check out our line of PTZ cameras here. However, because they are remote-controlled, there are a few things you should consider adding along with the camera.

You will need a POE switch to provide power, cabling to add connectivity, and a controller of some kind, not to mention mounts, etc.
